Hidden Artifact Appearances: All 36 and How to Get Them

Every Legion artifact weapon has one look the game never explains. There is no quest marker and no source in the Appearances tab: the unlock is a rare drop, a daily roll, a conversation with the right NPC or a chain of odd steps, from polymorphing five animals to fishing a shard out of a river. All 36 can still be unlocked in October 2026, and all but one can be done solo.

How hidden appearances work today

  • Get the artifact first. Each unlock item is tied to one spec and has to be used while you are in that spec, so do the spec's artifact quest before you farm.
  • Six need Order Hall research. Vengeance (Twisting Nether), Restoration druid (Evergreen), Frost mage (Teleportation Nexus), Brewmaster (Brewhouse), Subtlety (The Vault) and Destruction (Demonic Offering). Order Halls and their research still work in retail.
  • Relog after an unlock if the new look doesn't show up in the artifact or transmog window.
  • Any spec, same class. Since Shadowlands an artifact look can be worn in every spec of its class, but never by another class: no Ashbringer for warriors.

The three extra tints

Each hidden appearance has three more colours, unlocked by playing with any spec of that class once the first hidden look is yours on that character:

  • Tint 2: 30 Legion dungeons (final boss kills). It was 100 at launch and cut to 30 in April 2017.
  • Tint 3: 200 world quests.
  • Tint 4: 1,000 honorable kills.

Progress counts per character, the weapon no longer has to be equipped (since patch 7.3), and a finished tint applies to every hidden appearance of that class on that character, including ones you unlock later.

Transmog in Midnight

The new transmog system in the 12.0 pre-patch (January 2026) dropped the old "Legion Artifact" category, so artifact looks only show under their real weapon type. Patch 12.0.1 added an override for other weapon types, but as of late September 2026 players still report that it is not saved in outfits, that dual-wield off-hands disappear after a relog and that illusions can't be applied over it. Fist-weapon artifacts such as the Claws of Ursoc are hit hardest.

What about Legion Remix?

Legion Remix (October 2025 to 19 January 2026) gave ten specs shortcuts: no Order Hall research, and the Bronze vendor Horos at the Infinite Bazaar sold the Subtlety tome, the Ret shard and the BM designs. Those shortcuts ended with the event. Anything you unlocked during Remix stayed in your collection; everything below is the normal retail method.

Death Knight

Unholy Death Knight: Bone Reaper.
Unholy Death Knight: Bone Reaper.
  • Blood: Touch of Undeath (Maw of the Damned). Twisting Anima of Souls comes from the final chest of the world-quest version of Withered Army Training in Suramar. The quest unlocks after "Building an Army" in the Suramar campaign and costs Ancient Mana each run; a higher score means a better chance. It doesn't come up every day.
  • Frost: Dark Runeblade (Blades of the Fallen Prince). Runes of the Darkening drop from the world boss The Soultakers in Stormheim (/way 85, 10) while its world quest is up. Out of rotation, try the Four Horsemen in Naxxramas or Deathbringer Saurfang and the Lich King in Icecrown Citadel (25-player), once a week each.
  • Unholy: Bone Reaper (Apocalypse). Each Army of the Dead has a tiny chance to raise a talking ghoul who drops Professor Putricide's Lost Journal. With the journal, a trapdoor opens in Putricide's room in Icecrown Citadel (any difficulty). Kill Stitchwork in the hidden lab below for The Bonereaper's Hook.

Demon Hunter

Havoc Demon Hunter: Deathwalker.
Havoc Demon Hunter: Deathwalker.
Vengeance Demon Hunter: Iron Warden.
Vengeance Demon Hunter: Iron Warden.
  • Havoc: Deathwalker (Twinblades of the Deceiver). Loot Candrael's Charm from Suramar mobs (the Gilded Market is a good spot), then talk to Candrael Twinshadow (Suramar, 28.4, 70.3). She launches you at the demon Downfall: kill him in the air. If you can't loot him, relog and the Guise of the Deathwalker arrives in the mail.
  • Vengeance: Iron Warden (Aldrachi Warblades). Research Twisting Nether, then click the Sanctum Crystal next to Loramus in the Fel Hammer, read the Fel Tome and kill the demon it summons. The Bulwark of the Iron Warden is a very low daily chance.

Druid

Balance Druid: Sunkeeper's Reach.

Guardian Druid: Guardian of the Glade.

  • Balance: Sunkeeper's Reach (Scythe of Elune). Combine the Seed of Solar Fire (from Sylvia Hartshorn, Val'sharah 54.7, 73.3) with a Pure Drop of Shaladrassil's Sap (rare drop from Archdruid Glaidalis, first boss of Darkheart Thicket). Both need Exalted with the Dreamweavers on that druid.
  • Feral: Moonspirit (Fangs of Ashamane). The best-known druid secret, and it also gives a new Cat Form for every spec. Visit the Emerald Dreamway each day and listen for an emote naming Feralas, the Hinterlands or Duskwood. Find the Mark of the Moonspirit stone in that zone and touch it. After all three, Ela'Lothen appears in the Dreamway: /sit in front of him in Cat Form. Expect weeks of daily checks.
  • Guardian: Guardian of the Glade (Claws of Ursoc). Mark of the Glade Guardian drops from Ursoc in the Emerald Nightmare, any difficulty, and also gives a new Bear Form.
  • Restoration: Warden's Crown (G'Hanir). Research Evergreen, plant the two soil patches in the Dreamgrove (45, 63) and harvest them about three days later for a small chance at the Acorn of the Endless.

Marksmanship Hunter: Ravenguard.

Survival Hunter: Bear's Fortitude.
Survival Hunter: Bear's Fortitude.
  • Beast Mastery: Titan's Reach (Titanstrike). The easiest of all: buy the Designs of the Grand Architect from Hobart Grapplehammer in Legion Dalaran's engineering shop (38.4, 24.6) for 8,000 gold. The gun becomes a bow.
  • Marksmanship: Ravenguard (Thas'dorah). Sold by Veridis Fallon in Azsuna (47.0, 41.4) at Revered with the Court of Farondis.
  • Survival: Bear's Fortitude (Talonclaw). Last Breath of the Forest drops from Ursoc in the Emerald Nightmare.

Mage

Frost Mage: Frostfire Remembrance.
Frost Mage: Frostfire Remembrance.
  • Arcane: Woolomancer's Charge (Aluneth). The sheep staff, found in September 2016 by the Order of the Shepherd. Polymorph five beasts once each: a Cliffwing Hippogryph (Azsuna), Wild Dreamrunner (Val'sharah), Highpeak Goat (Highmountain), Plains Runehorn Calf (Stormheim) and Heartwood Doe (Suramar). On a later day a Volatile Sheep may appear in the Hall of the Guardian: click it until it explodes. Then explode the Extremely Volatile Stormheim Sheep in the Runewood, and finally visit the Tower of Azora in Elwynn Forest (65, 69), where Cote "Shepherd" Metcalf and his sheep are waiting to be fought.
  • Fire: Stars' Design (Felo'melorn). A random drop from Legion mobs, mostly in Suramar; the Gilded Market is the usual farm.
  • Frost: Frostfire Remembrance (Ebonchill). Research Teleportation Nexus. On a lucky day every portal in the Hall of the Guardian leads to the Altar of Kron in Frostfire Ridge on Draenor. Follow Cindreck there and take the Everburning Crystal.

Monk

  • Brewmaster: Ancient Brewkeeper (Fu Zan). Research Brewhouse, then click the Bubbling Keg in the Stormstout Inn on the Wandering Isle once a day for the Legend of the Monkey King.
  • Mistweaver: Breath of the Undying Serpent (Sheilun). Drops from the Dragons of Nightmare in the Emerald Nightmare.
  • Windwalker: Stormfist (Fists of the Heavens). From the Withered Army Training chest, like Blood.

Retribution Paladin: Corrupted Remembrance.

  • Holy: Watcher's Armament (The Silver Hand). Lost Edicts of the Watcher drop from Legion demons; the Eredar Supplicants at Faronaar in Azsuna are the usual farm.
  • Protection: Vindicator's Bulwark (Truthguard). From the Withered Army Training chest.
  • Retribution: Corrupted Remembrance (Ashbringer). The longest chain, done in this order:
    1. Get both copies of Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin': the normal one from Alterac Valley and the "thoroughly read" one from the Dusty Tomes in Dire Maul. Both can be bought on the Auction House.
    2. Loot the Head of Nefarian in Blackwing Lair and don't turn it in.
    3. In Ret spec, talk to Sister Elda in the Sanctum of Light.
    4. Talk to Prince Tortheldrin in Dire Maul West without killing Immol'thar.
    5. Talk to Bardu Sharpeye at the Bulwark (Horde) or Alexia Ironknife at Chillwind Camp (Alliance).
    6. Read Isillien's Journal in Hearthglen (42.4, 18.7).
    7. Kill the rare Large Vile Slime at Thondroril River (69, 46) and use its Timolain's Phylactery.
    8. Fish the Shard of Darkness out of water marked "Thondroril River" on the minimap (69.3, 45.3). It is extremely rare.
    9. Take "Walking in Shadows" from Lord Maxwell Tyrosus and place the shard on the altar in Acherus.

Shadow Priest: Claw of N'Zoth.
Shadow Priest: Claw of N'Zoth.
  • Discipline: Tomekeeper's Spire (Light's Wrath). Talk to Archivist Inkforge in the Netherlight Temple first, or the books stay invisible. Then collect twelve volumes of the Writings of the End: two more in the temple, a shelf in the Violet Citadel, three rares (Inquisitor Ernstenbok, Artificer Lothaire, Chief Bitterbrine), the Black Rook Hold map room, the church in New Hearthglen, Scholomance, the Scarlet Halls and the Guardian's Library in Karazhan.
  • Holy: Crest of the Lightborn (T'uure). Combine the Rod of the Ascended (Valdemar Stormseeker, Stormheim) with the Crest of the Lightborn (Hyrja, Halls of Valor). Both need Exalted with the Valarjar.
  • Shadow: Claw of N'Zoth (Xal'atath). Drops from Il'gynoth in the Emerald Nightmare.

Subtlety Rogue: Venombite.
Subtlety Rogue: Venombite.
  • Assassination: Bonebreaker (The Kingslayers). The Cypher of Broken Bone comes from the rares or the Underbelly Hoard in the sewers under Legion Dalaran.
  • Outlaw: Thunderfury, Hallowed Blade of the Windlord (The Dreadblades). Yes, Thunderfury. Collect both Bindings of the Windlord (left from Dargrul in Neltharion's Lair, right from Ash'golm in the Vault of the Wardens, Normal or higher) and ten Infernal Brimstone. Then speak to Thrymjaris in Stormheim (41, 81) in Outlaw spec and pick the second option. The first one only earns you a long debuff.
  • Subtlety: Venombite (Fangs of the Devourer). Research The Vault. A Sparkling Set of Keys from a Vault ticket or Marin Noggenfogger's Lucky Coins gives Keys to the Palace of Lei Shen. Each key runs the Troves of the Thunder King scenario, and Lei Shen's Burial Troves at its end can hold the Tome of Otherworldly Venoms. The longest luck-based chain in the game.

  • Elemental: Prestige of the Amani (The Fist of Ra-den). The Lost Codex of the Amani comes from the Underbelly rares and hoard, like Assassination.
  • Enhancement: Zandalar Champion (Doomhammer). From the world bosses Flotsam (Highmountain) or Levantus (Azsuna) while their world quest is up, or from Helya in the Trial of Valor.
  • Restoration: Serpent's Coil (Sharas'dal). Drops from Warlord Parjesh and Lady Hatecoil in the Eye of Azshara.

Destruction Warlock: Legionterror.
Destruction Warlock: Legionterror.
  • Affliction: Fate's End (Ulthalesh). Loot the Grimoire of the First Necrolyte from Eredar, then earn 13 Skulls of the Executed from rare-elite world quests marked as dangerous. Summon Sataiel at the Executioner's Altar in the tomb near Karazhan (Deadwind Pass, 40, 73.5). Plan on about two weeks.
  • Demonology: Thal'kiel's Visage (Skull of the Man'ari). Eredar drop five grey heads in a fixed order and then the Visage of the First Wakener; the Supplicants at Faronaar work well.
  • Destruction: Legionterror (Scepter of Sargeras). The only group unlock: three warlocks of the same faction in a party cast Ritual of Doom on the summoning platform in the Dreadscar Rift. The demon has a small daily chance to drop The Burning Jewel of Sargeras.

Warrior

Fury Warrior: Dragonslayer's Edge.
Fury Warrior: Dragonslayer's Edge.
Protection Warrior: Last Breath of the Worldbreaker.
Protection Warrior: Last Breath of the Worldbreaker.
  • Arms: Arcanite Bladebreaker (Strom'kar). On some days Master Smith Helgar in Skyhold offers "Secrets of the Axes". The roll is region-wide, so when he has it, everyone does. Speak to Saurfang in Dalaran, then beat him in a duel.
  • Fury: Dragonslayer's Edge (Warswords of the Valarjar). Collect the Haft of the God-King (God-King Skovald, Halls of Valor) and the skulls of the world bosses Shar'thos and Nithogg, or both skulls from Odyn in the Trial of Valor. Exalted with the Valarjar is required.
  • Protection: Last Breath of the Worldbreaker (Scale of the Earth-Warder). Each day the Burning Plate of the Worldbreaker may appear in Neltharion's Vault, an open-world cave in Highmountain (45, 72). Enter in Protection spec and listen for a roar from the cavern.

Mage Tower appearances

The 36 Mage Tower looks from patch 7.2 are a different thing: they came from solo challenges on the Broken Shore and have been gone since the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch in July 2018. The Timewalking Mage Tower, permanent since March 2022, gives armour sets, a mount and a Fel Werebear form, never these weapon skins.
