Secret Tanaris Islands

South-east of Land's End Beach in Tanaris, beyond deep water that the world map doesn't show, lay two small islands. Getting there took every trick in the book. Players called them the secret Tanaris islands; the wiki knows them as the South Seas islands.

Getting there

Deep water separated the islands from the mainland, and fatigue killed anyone who simply swam. Explorers combined everything they had: swim speed potions, Levitate, sprinting, travel forms, healing, and a soulstone to come back to life on the shore.

What was there

The two islands looked much alike. One was home to fire rocs, hyenas, scorpions and Southsea Freebooters, the pirates of the Tanaris coast. On the other stood a mound of wood and shovels, perhaps a buried treasure. The islands also played a small part in the quest Draconic for Dummies, part of the long chain to the Scepter of the Shifting Sands.

What happened to them

Cataclysm removed the islands from the game, although they still appear on post-Cataclysm maps in World of Warcraft: Chronicle and Exploring Azeroth: Kalimdor. In WoW Classic they are back, and explorers still make the swim.

From the archive

I made it to the island, there are actually two of them. I used a swim speed potion and when that ran out I used levitate and kept going. I died near the shore and used my soulstone, and then I was there. Not much to see, just a scorpion and a few pirates.
