Mark of the Syndicate
Kill members of the Syndicate in Alterac and the Arathi Highlands and sooner or later you loot a grey item called Mark of the Syndicate. It sells for a few copper. Beta players were convinced it was meant for something more.
Two theories
The first story came from the beta: farm enough Syndicate members, the rumour went, and a named dragon would appear and attack you. The second came from an entry in the Thottbot database for a spell called Syndicate Disguise: a three-second cast that used Wool Cloth as a reagent and the Mark of the Syndicate as a tool, and disguised you as a Syndicate Highwayman. Neither the dragon nor the disguise ever appeared in the live game.
What happened to it
The mark is still a grey junk item. Players looking for a use for Syndicate loot today usually mean a different item: the Syndicate Emblems that rogues pick-pocket from Syndicate members in Hillsbrad and trade to a Ravenholdt guard for reputation with Ravenholdt.
