Warlock Green Fire: The Codex of Xerrath Today

Green fire is the oldest secret a warlock can earn. A rare tome starts a quest chain that ends with a solo scenario in Black Temple, and the reward, the Codex of Xerrath, turns your fire spells fel green for good. It has been in the game since 2013, and at max level the only hard part is a hallway full of traps.

What turns green

Rain of Fire, Immolate, Incinerate, Conflagrate, Soul Fire, Hellfire, Burning Rush, your Wild Imps and the Felsteed and Dreadsteed. Chaos Bolt, which is already green, gets bigger.

Step 1: the Sealed Tome of the Lost Legion

The tome drops from rare elites on the Isle of Thunder at about 2% per kill. It can be traded until you use it, so most players simply buy one on the Auction House.

Combine it with a normal Healthstone to get the Codex of Xerrath, which starts the quest. If a talent turns your Healthstone into a Demonic Healthstone, it won't combine: drop that talent, make a plain Healthstone and try again.

Step 2: the quest chain

  1. An Unusual Tome: ask your demons about the book.
  2. Reader for the Dead Tongue: take it to the warlock trainer in Orgrimmar (Cleft of Shadow) or Stormwind (Mage Quarter).
  3. Read the enlistment orders and "A Tale of Six Masters", then kill the faction target the quest gives you.
  4. Seeking the Soulstones: follow Jubeka's journal to four soulstone fragments in Hellfire Peninsula, Netherstorm, Blade's Edge and Shadowmoon Valley.
  5. Infiltrating the Black Temple: click Jubeka's mark on the main gate of Black Temple, not the raid portal, to enter the solo scenario.

Step 3: the Black Temple scenario

  • At max level every enemy, Kanrethad Ebonlocke included, dies in a hit or two. Turn Chromie Time off before the boss.
  • The real obstacle is the trap maze with ghosts. Dismiss your pet (Demonology's Wild Imps set traps off too) and cast Eye of Kilrogg to see the traps.
  • If you die or leave, click the mark again and you return to the stage you reached.
  • At the end, summon Kanrethad at the Demonic Soulwell, kill him and take the Codex from his body.

Switching it off and on

Green fire is per character and can be toggled. Talk to Jubeka Shadowbreaker at the Altar of Damnation in Shadowmoon Valley in Outland (42.4, 43.8) to turn it off; draw on the banished Kanrethad on the hill nearby to turn it back on.

Other fel looks for warlocks

  • Glyph of Fel-Touched Shards turns the soul shards over your head green. Its recipe drops from Inquisitor Vethroz on Argus.
  • Grimoire of the Fel Imp swaps your Imp for a Fel Imp.
  • Legionterror, the hidden Destruction artifact look, is a fel Scepter of Sargeras. See our hidden artifact appearances guide.

Only the Codex recolours your spells. The Feat of Strength and the "of the Black Harvest" title from 2013 are no longer awarded.
