Hunter Taming Tomes: Every Family Unlock in 2026

Some pet families can't be tamed until your hunter learns how. Each one has its own unlock: a book from a rare, a quest at a renown level, a crafted matrix or an item hidden behind a raid mount. This is every one of them in October 2026, what it unlocks, whether it counts for your whole Warband, and where to get it.

Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix

Made by Legion engineers; the schematic costs a Curious Coin from Xur'ios in Legion Dalaran. Each hunter uses their own. Gnome, goblin and mechagnome hunters already know it. See our mechanical pets guide.

Simple Tome of Bone-Binding

A rare drop from elites all over Maldraxxus and from the Plaguefall and Theater of Pain bosses, at around 1% at best. It unlocks undead looks across many families: skeletal birds of prey and raptors, skeletal devilsaurs, plague dogs, fel wolves, hell hounds and a scourged mammoth. Forsaken hunters already know it.

How to Train a Dragonkin

The reward of "Taming the Dragon...kin" from Kaestrasz in Valdrakken (46.8, 78.8) at Valdrakken Accord Renown 23. Proto-drakes, drakes and faerie dragons, and vorquin too. Dracthyr hunters already know it.

How to School Your Serpent

From San Redscale at the Arboretum in the Jade Forest (56.6, 44.4) at Exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent. Any class can buy and read it for the Warband. Pandaren hunters already know it.

Tome of the Hybrid Beast

Gryphons, hippogryphs, owlcats, wolfhawks and wind riders. Pan the Kind Hand sells it in Trueshot Lodge (58.4, 32.0) for 1,000 Order Resources once the hunter class hall campaign is done. The skill is per character, but the book binds to the Warband, so you can buy copies for your alts. It used to be Beast Mastery only; that ended with Battle for Azeroth.

Blood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers

Crawgs, blood ticks and blistercreeps. Hunters loot it almost every time from Zul, Reborn in Uldir on Normal or higher. It was meant for a raid of only hunters on Heroic, until a player got it early by using his Hearthstone mid-fight and Blizzard turned it into a plain drop in December 2018.

Ancient Tome of Dinomancy

Direhorns. A rare drop, under 1%, from the Zandalari Dinomancers on the Isle of Giants (around 39, 71). Each hunter farms their own. Zandalari troll hunters already know it.

Gargon Training Manual

About a 15% drop from Huntmaster Petrus, a rare in Revendreth (61.9, 78.5); his two gargons become tameable once he falls. Gargons are stone hounds, an exotic family, so Beast Mastery only.

Ottuk Taming

Reach Iskaara Tuskarr Renown 11 and do the chain that starts with "A Lost Tribe" and ends with "While the Iron Is Hot". Any class can earn it for the Warband.

Cinder of Companionship

The most hidden of them all. You get it by learning the mount Anu'relos, Flame's Guidance, a rare drop from Mythic Fyrakk in Amirdrassil. It unlocks a single spirit beast, Nah'qi, a fire owl who circles Amirdrassil in the Emerald Dream (around 45, 66). Beast Mastery only.

Trials of the Florafaun Hunter

Midnight's addition: a tablet that unlocks Harandar's plant beasts across several families, from saptors and petalwings to the exotic devilsaptor. It drops from five Harandar rares: Queen Lashtongue (59.8, 46.6), Dracaena (40.4, 43.4), Ha'kalawe (68.0, 60.6), Pterrock (27.1, 70.2) and Oro'ohna (28.2, 82.0). Players usually get it within a kill or two.

Not a tome, but close

• Hati: Thorim's wolf comes back through a quest chain from patch 8.1.5; see the spirit beast catalog.
• The N'lyeth trick: hunters found that the toy N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth lets them tame normally friendly creatures in Battle for Azeroth zones, such as the Ivory Cloud Serpent. It's unofficial and could be patched.
• Pet specializations: since patch 11.1 any Stable Master can switch a pet between Ferocity, Tenacity and Cunning, and the stable holds 205 pets.

Some names float around that don't exist: there is no Tome of Dragon Taming, no gargoyle or aquatic tome and no Glyph of the Lost Herd.
