Smoldering Ember Wyrm: Summoning Nightbane

Nightbane is back, but only for those quick enough. Light five crystals around Return to Karazhan before time runs out and Medivh's image summons the dragon, who has a chance to drop the Smoldering Ember Wyrm.

Type: mount (flying) · Added: patch 7.1 · Where: Return to Karazhan on Mythic (no keystone) · Drop: not guaranteed, once per week · Feat: One Night in Karazhan

How the event works

Set the dungeon to Mythic before entering the lower Karazhan entrance in Deadwind Pass. When you zone in, an emote says a strange chill winds through the air, and a hidden timer starts. Each Soul Fragment crystal you click gives a stack of Medivh's Echo, and at five stacks it turns into Medivh's Presence. Dying removes your stacks.

The crystal route

  1. Opera Hall: in the audience seats opposite the stage.
  2. Maiden of Virtue's wing: in the side room on the left of the last hallway before Maiden. You can skip the boss.
  3. Moroes: behind the dining table in his banquet hall. Kill him so he doesn't chase you.
  4. Below the banquet hall: in the back of the area under the banquet hall. A portal appears next to it that takes you straight back to the entrance.
  5. The Curator: head up to the Menagerie and kill the Curator. The last crystal appears where he falls.

Nightbane

With Medivh's Presence, go back down from the Curator. At the bottom of the stairs, turn left onto the Master's Terrace overlooking the gate. Talk to the Image of Medivh. After a short scene he summons Nightbane. If Medivh isn't there, you were too slow or missed a crystal. Nightbane is easy at current levels.

The mount isn't guaranteed, so expect a few weekly attempts. Save looting for the end, since every second counts on the route.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong difficulty. The event only runs on Mythic. You don't need a keystone, just change the dungeon difficulty before you enter.
  • Wrong entrance. Use the lower Return to Karazhan entrance, since the route starts at the Opera Hall.
  • Dying with stacks. Death removes Medivh's Echo, and the timer keeps running. At current levels this only happens if you pull far too much at once.
  • Looting on the way. Every boss can wait. Loot after Nightbane.

How often you can try

Nightbane can be looted once per week per character, and the mount drop is a chance rather than a certainty, so most collectors run it weekly on several characters. Even when the wyrm doesn't drop, the first kill awards the One Night in Karazhan feat of strength.

Quick checklist

  1. Mythic Return to Karazhan, lower entrance.
  2. Crystals: Opera Hall, Maiden's side room, Moroes, below the banquet hall, the Curator.
  3. Image of Medivh on the Master's Terrace.
  4. Kill Nightbane and hope.
